Abstract
The article examines divergent reactions to the unprecedented press conference by four senior Supreme Court justices and the letter they addressed to the Chief Justice of India. While views range from praise to criticism, the immediate crisis appears resolved, though underlying issues remain unsettled. Two core concerns are highlighted: delays by the Union government in responding to the Collegium’s Memorandum of Procedure, and limits on the Chief Justice’s authority as master of the roster. Emphasising constitutional conventions, the piece argues that while the CJI has administrative primacy, judicial authority is co-equal, and legitimacy rests on adherence to institutional norms and collective responsibility.
