Abstract

The article analyses the ICJ’s July 2024 Advisory Opinion on Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories amid global fatigue with prolonged war and mounting civilian suffering. It highlights the Court’s reaffirmation of the prohibition on acquisition of territory by force, linkage with Palestinian self-determination, and obligations of all states not to aid illegal occupation. While Israel rejects the opinion, the piece stresses its strong normative force in international law, including findings on racial discrimination, settlement expansion, and environmental harm. Acknowledging debates on intent and proof, it concludes that the opinion strengthens prospects for accountability, reparations, and a just peace grounded in binding principles of international legality and dignity. In India Legal.
