Abstract
The article analyses the Supreme Court’s November 2023 ruling quashing the reappointment of the Kannur University Vice-Chancellor, affirming two key constitutional principles: protection of university autonomy from political interference and the governor’s independent role as chancellor, not bound by ministerial advice. The Court censured abdication of statutory discretion and clarified limits on executive influence in academic governance. While recognising discretionary power, it stressed that such power must be exercised reasonably, not arbitrarily. The piece situates the judgment within constitutional values of autonomy, accountability, and the rule of law, arguing that genuine institutional accountability can only follow from prior academic autonomy.
